NH SCRAPBOOK: "....daunting terrible"

In 1672, John Josselyn wrote this mouthful to describe the view from the summit of Great Mountain (now called Mt. Washington):
The country beyond these hills northward is daunting terrible being full of rocky hills as thick as mole hills in a meadow and clothes with infinite thick woods.
It hasn't changed a bit.
